Lexus RC F

The mood music is bullish from the American manufacturers at the Detroit Motorshow, which gets under way this week.

But we’re excited by the launch of the Lexus RC F, the top spec version of Lexus’s Mustang-like coupé.

The RC F is equipped with a new 5.0-litre V8 engine with a maximum output set to be well above 450bhp. It’s the most powerful V8 road-going car Lexus has built to date – and that status is reflected in the styling – including wider wheels and tyres, an active rear wing, air scoops, cooling ducts and carbon fibre components.

“The form of each component is carefully designed to contribute to performance,” said Yukihiko Yaguchi, RC F Chief Engineer. “Unique air outlets in the bonnet and rear section of the front wings contribute to optimum engine cooling and handling stability. They create a powerful look that immediately conveys the expectation of a dynamic driving experience.”

The technical blather in the Lexus press release is offset by the pure and simple phatness of the thing. It’s not quite as Godzilla as Nissan’s GTR V-Spec – but it’s just striking enough to stick out there on its own and compete for a unique slice of Japanese brawn.

If any Japanese motor is going to appeal to the rank and file of patriotic American revheads, then this is it.
