I remember seeing the 917’s race in the 1970’s. The thing that still sends a chill down my spine is the noise: it wasn’t musical like a Ferrari V12 but the visceral howl of raw power. The most important thing is that there wasn’t just one of them; especially during the early stage of an endurance race there was always a pack of them, flat-out, no quarter given, or asked. Wall of sound? Phil Spector, eat your heart out!

were you at the Goodwood Festival of Speed last July where they had Gulf liveried 917, 908 and the 962?
the cars still look astonishingly fast at standstill. a piece of card was hanging between the 917 tailpipes, ‘Ferrari drivers view’!
