We stumbled across the work of Antipodean photographer Simon Davidson today and were immediately struck by his sensitive eye and brilliant sense of colour and composition. This little selection of burnouts brings a certain something that you often don’t see when the lens is turned onto the drag scene.
Down under, they of course like their engines with 8 cylinders, (preferably arranged in a V formation), their beer cold and the other stuff as simple as possible.
Simon, however, manages to tease out a broad pallet of emotions with these images. Peering beyond the brutish display of mechanical inefficiency that is your average competitive burnout event, what emerges is truly aesthetic experience.
Stephen has recently exhibited at the Bondi Pavillion. Who knows, he may be coming to a scene near you!
