Volvo 240 & The City

Cars

The Volvo 240 is one of those cars that can look different each time you see it. Wrought in a stunningly simple three box format (or two, as in the perennially popular estate version), it is a classic of utilitarian design.

No wonder then that a discerning spotter of automotive simplicity has picked out the Volvo 240 as subject of a fascinating Instagram feed.

240 and the City is just as it appears to be. Like the subject of its lens it is a simple series of perpendicular captures of the humble but integrated car.

It’s purely in the spirit of Influx Street Spots that our Scandinavian soul-brother is documenting the loveliness on our side streets. How long til the 240 is recognised as a bona fide classic.

Right now we reckon.

  1. One of the classic cars of all time. I had two Volvo 240 Estates in succession. The first was the best car I ever owned. Not a top-of-range model like the second one, but the most marvellous car with the best paintwork out. Bought it at a few years old and all it ever cost me, other than regular services, in the two or three years I owned it was two tyres and a light bulb for the light which illuminated the rear floor area.

Tara thanks for the word: I too am a former owner of a 240GL: a real old faithful I miss

to this day. I went on to an equally faithful 440 too: and now the main family wagon remains a Volvo: Xc90 flavour this time. Shot through with utility and reliability. That’s what we like. [email protected]
