Renault Dauphine

The Dauphine was of course one of the pioneering small, economic contin­ental cars that steered the world away from two ton gas guzzlers at the end of the fifties.

It was a cute, compact issue designed inhouse by Renault with assists from carrozeria Ghia.

You can see the moddish elements of the three box design, whose Euro motifs where decidedly other than the American chrome clad giants that were being designed at the time, and with whome the Dauphine would attempt to do battle.

Check out this inter­esting ad for the little Frenchie from North America — its inter­esting to see how, as far back as fifty years ago, urban utility and fuel economy were becoming a marketing element. America might have been booming, but they also wanted to keep an early eye on the pennies.

We’re not sure how successful the car proved to be in the states, but it would have cut an altern­ative dash on the streets of Manhattan, as it would do today.

These little cars, with their rear mounted engine and rear ‘swing axle’ would have been a quirky little handler too — a lot more fun to chuck around than your average Buick at the time.

Cool Volvo Ads

We’re not sure exactly what the copy means.

Our knowledge of Swedish is far from accurate, and even google’s trans­lation service seems to be a little knocked out of whack by the copy line.

But we think we get it.

There is, basically, a Volvo for you ; whether you’re a whacked out psyche­delic sort of chap or a card carrying granny out on a day trip.

But no matter: the visual commu­nic­ation says it all: and we’ll be damned if everything from the boxed out wagon to the Amazon doesn’t here look to have that precise sort of character that the Swedish brand has always been known for.

Audi in the Ads

Audi is one of the Automotive brands out there that has always been highly skilled at repres­enting itself. That strap line is probably one of the most instantly recog­nisable in the history of advert­ising, and has encap­su­lated Audi’s technologically-​​focussed ethos perfectly. There have been some rather cool TV campaigns that have deepened and broadened the awareness of the brand. Here’s a fistful of our faves.

If You Want to be Happy...

On this particular day, when we’ve been saturated with admon­i­tions to change your own and your neighbour’s lives by sticking a little cross next to one politician or another’s name, we thought that the various spin doctors of party politics could take a leaf out of this brazen Beemer bike ad from the seventies.

And we’re sure you know that size is not the measure of true happiness. But surely British leyland were pushing the bound­aries a bit when they put forward the Mini as the answer to contentment.

But in the way that this woman is lovingly assisting with the safety of the situation with the handbrake, we think that the MG Midget just might be the answer. Maybe size doesn’t matter, after all.

The Greenwash Chronicles

Most of us realise that there is nothing remotely ‘sustainable’ or ‘envir­on­mentally friendly’ about the mass-​​market auto industry. Still, these global businesses are they’re doing their utmost to convince consumers that they are doing there bit to save the planet. Some are brazenly faux pious, but others have a sense of humour (of sorts) Here are a few of our faves.

This Honda Civic hybrid ad from 2006 is a classic of the happy, hipster illus­trated flowers genre

For a full forty seconds, this looks like an ad for God’s creation…

Former Japanese F1 pilot Takuma Sato sends mixed messages in his Hybrid.

Ands this early Prius ad helps us recall that if you take the ‘r’ out of Prius you get something that sounds like ‘pious’

Here the new Prius falls back on the car’s design, less on the exploit­ation of the beauty of mountains and rivers. But the breathy female voice is still annoy­ingly remin­iscent of a mother Mary from Midlothian…

But this contro­versial ‘harmony’ ad for Toyota is a little insulting to the intel­li­gence. And to hippies.

One for the Tea Party Neocons here, shown during the Superbowl this year. Quite amusing, though.

But this Australian Smart ad takes the piety to another level. And uses children in the process.

Ferrari Fuel

Not sure why we haven’t seen this before, but this is undoubtedly some of the nicest pieces of automotive action we’ve come across for a very long time.

One possible reason for this exquisite (and doubt­lessly extremely expensive)  commercial’s lack of widespread release might be that it recalls the brilliant Honda ads that took viewers through the brand’s noble engin­eering  lineage across platforms, genres and formulae.

Who know which came first?

With Honda’s recent sad and ignominious retreat from motor­sport, it might be time to resurrect this beauti­fully rhythmic, sonically delicious piece of work.
