BMW: Joy

Car companies obviously spend a hell of a lot of money on ad campaigns.

As close watchers of the various ways that car makers seek constantly to reinvent themselves we were of course excited about BMW’s recent JOY campaign (vaguely fascist connotations notwithstanding).

It was a bold, top to bottom bit of marketing rather than a simple piece of rebranding. The JOY in BMW was injected in every way the brand was represented; from the colours of their vehicles through to the tone of voice adopted by dealership receptionists.

But it occurred to us also, that they could done a similar job as the HD edit below, in an image as simple as the one above.

The message, after all is simple. You can have fun in your BMW car. The b&w air shot seems to say everything you could ever want to say.

Volvo Gets Air!

Friday, June 4th, 2010

In a little reprise of our recent Scandinavian theme, we felt the need to share with you an incredible picture of a rare moment of Volvo Air.

Imagine the momentum the driver of this 240 would have had to carry to release all four wheels to such a great height!

Makes that hump I traverse on the school run every morning in my 740 Estate look all the more interesting!

I’ve always liked the classic three box profile of the 240 saloon. This makes me want one even more.

Fresh Air

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

There’s something special about getting air on a motorised vehicle.

You hang out at the edge of control. You flirt with the forces of physics. You indulge the primitive human impulse to fly. That’s why the action sequences of world rally, the frozen moments of the TT, and of course freestyle motor crossers are all focused on hang time.

It might be a mechanical case of velocity crossed with terrain that has all day dreaming drivers aping Icarus, but it’s a powerful impulse.  Even on our school run in the morning, two particular hump back grades of tarmac make the drudge doable, especially in the dry, dusty height of summer.

Go get some.
