Koenigsegg Agera Breaks Records?

Thursday, December 1st, 2011

But we stumbled recently across this morning this amazing footage of Swedish supercar manufacturer Koenigsegg’s latest creation, the 5.0 liter twin-turbocharged V8 Agera, recently breaking the record for going from 0-300KM/h and then back to a stop. You can see all the official numbers on the Koeniggsegg site.

Now, we’re not really sure of the veracity of this sort of stuff. That’s why we don’t usually post stuff on the fastest, quickest, most outrageous hypercars. Our friends and collaborators at places like Pistonheads and other sites do this with more insider knowledge than us about these sorts of things.

We’re not sure even sure if these sorts of things actually matter, either, apart from the way it appeals to that little boyish, top-trumpish bit inside all of us. But, as that part of us is actually pretty huge, we thought we’d share this anyway.

The record is acknowledged, the original posters of the clip reckon, by the people at the official Guinness World Records (is that still a Mcwhirter? If so we’ll try to get them on the phone).

Video below has in-car footage, and some external stuff in the last bit. Pretty wild.

If you follow the link to Youtube, you can see there’s some discussion about wether or not the Bugatti Veyron Supersport outdoes the Agera.

We’ll let you decide what to believe.

Lamborghini Aventador Arrives (almost)

Monday, February 28th, 2011

The runup to the Geneva Auto Salon always ups the ante in terms of launch buzz. If you’re a card carrying concept geek it’s your favourite time of year– but even the mildly petrolheaded amongst us can’t fail to get excited about the unveiling of a new Lamborghini.

The profile pic above is easily the most exciting shot we’ve seen to date of the long-in-the-tooth Murcielago’s replacement. According to various car gossip sites the trademark is applied for in the US and it’s DEFINITELY going to be called the Aventador LP700-4.

But what do we know?

And yes, that of course means it’s supposedly packing seven hundred horses driven through all four wheels.

As probably the last V12 that will ever emerge from Sant’Agata, they were always going to make this one beautiful powerplant (below).

Low slung and superbly styled, the drivetrain reflects the fractured yet coherent surfaces of the coachwork — it’s like they’ve taken the most attractive elements of the Reventon and fused them with that of the Sesto Elemento concept of a couple of years ago.

Work harder. Start saving.

Mutant Exige from Silverstone Via Texas

Monday, March 29th, 2010

Historically the fastest and sexiest piece of Anglo-American vehicular collaboration may have been the Mustang P51 fighter-bomber. But now, there’s a demonic transatlantic pretender to the P51’s throne.

Meet the Hennessey Venom GT. The engine’s from the Lone Star state and the Lotus Exige-based chassis is pieced together, and the car assembled (with trick running gear, traction control and a fusillade of Brembo pots) in our very own Silverstone.

According to Jalopnik and TG and PH its power-to-weight ratio is 0.302, bettering the figures of 0.254 that you get with a Bugatti Veyron.

Whilst the £600K price tag seems a little excessive for a tuned Lotus, only 10 will be made a year. And the feeling of 715bhp in a car that weighs just over a metric tonne is going to be something to experience.

Is it us, though, or are all hypercars starting to look the same?

One-Seven Seven Goes Ballistic

177

Aston Martin’s One-77 supercar has moved closer to setting a new all-time record for the British marque in initial high speed testing.

According the Aston Martin, the ridiculously pricey and carnally proportioned One-77 is currently undergoing development testing in advance of the planned launch in 2010 at a top secret proving ground in southern Europe. In a series of test runs completed last week the One-77 exceeded original expectations and recorded a 220.007mph (354.86kmh) top speed in dry but windy conditions Dynamic testing is now scheduled to continue into the New Year.

As name suggests, production of the seven litre V12 hypercar with a unique carbon-fibre monocoque is limited up to a maximum of 77 individually numbered examples, with deliveries expected to commence in mid-2010.

Stick us down for one.

Caparo covers up

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

caparo_scaled_2

Well, we all know that we should be neglecting the attitude that cars are fundamentally about freedom and fun and campaigning for scrappage legislation so that we can trade in our old smelly Alfas for Japanese hybrids. But come on. You have to admire the Caparo’s pure blooded lust for life.

With the limbs, heart, lungs and mind of an F1 car and the practicability of a string shopping bag for a Lidl bulk buy, the high end ‘Race Extreme’ version of the car is now available.

With an evolved all aluminium, normally aspirated, fuel injected Caparo V8 engine which has been upgraded to deliver 620 bhp at 10,500 rpm, the thing accelerates to 100 MPH in 5.8 seconds and pushes out to over 200 mph.

It made us giggle, then, when we read that following a “highly successful launch in the UAE and increased customer demand”, there’s a new ‘climate pack’ going to be available on all new Caparos. But this ‘climate pack’ has nothing to do with the climate change. Oh no. This climate pack consists of a canopy and air con, and is aimed squarely at the middle eastern market. Yes the oil barons who live in Emirates that know not so much as a traffic restriction and who can still afford to buy and run these £250K hypercars.

The canopy in question is made from a toughened acrylic used in armoured windshields and helicopters, and it slides forward over the nose of the vehicle and provides a cosy cockpit space for the driver, just like in, say an F-16 fighter. This option costs £21,760. In addition to the canopy configuration, an air conditioning unit can also be fitted. This is a snip at £3,750. Both these extras can also be retrofitted to existing cars.

So let’s get this straight. Safe from the perils of the blazing desert sun (magnified by the lens of the emissions-generated fug that wafts like a shroud over the planet), our Caparo-owning oil baron friends can also be protected from assassination attempts and having to smell the burning of the troublesome oil wells.

This is political incorrectness raised to the level of art.

Cool car though, eh?
