We spend a good proportion of every day thinking about, looking at and messing about with cars and motorcycles.
So when a car appears that makes us go all girly and silly. It’s got to be something special. This 1958 BMW 507 series two just made us blush like a teenager in love.
Just look at it.
The technical details are as follows:145 bhp, 3,168 cc all-alloy overhead-valve V-8 engine with dual carburettors, four-speed manual transmission, independent front suspension with dual A-arms and torsion bars, live rear axle with torsion bars, and hydraulic front disc and rear drum brakes.
The car designed specifically for the American market and imported to compete with the 300SL Mercedes. And you can see the lines, full of grace but hinting at an aggression – are broadly in line with what was done with the Mercedes.
But for us, there’s an impeccable purity of form here – one that eclipses the Benz in every area. And the thing is, until very recently these were overlooked by collectors – meaning that appreciation of these beauties has been astronomic of late. Put it this way: RM Auctions reckon this will sell at their forthcoming Amelia Island sale for as much as $1.8M US. Pretty astronomical for a fifties Beemer – but in a way, justified. There were only 251 ever made – and at the time they were offered for sale for a hefty $11000 US.
