Meet Jakob Ebrey

Our FOCUS for this edition is Jakob Ebrey.

From discovering a natural knack of being in the right place at the right time, Jakob wasted no time becoming a professional photographer. We chat to the friendly photographer about how it started and how he became one of the most well-respected motorsport photographers.

Ebrey Schumacher

Influx: How did you get into photography?

Ebrey: “Well it’s all my Dad’s fault really… I was taken as a spectator to Oulton Park in Cheshire since I was a baby. He used to snap for fun, then I had a go and the rest you could say is history!
“I somehow had an uncanny knack of being in the right place at the right time – or the wrong place at the right time if you ask the drivers! From the age of about fourteen, I decided that this was the career for me, and started getting images used in mainstream newspapers and magazines whilst I was at school! I finished my A-levels on the Friday and started as a photographer on the Monday following.”

Influx: What kind of subjects do you like to shoot?
Ebrey: “Anything really – though I am more recognised for shooting cars and drivers. I have shot international football, weddings, restoration projects, royal visits and loads more – I just like taking images that make people happy!”

Influx: Are there any images you’re particularly proud of?
Ebrey: “There are quite a few that spring to mind but it’s things that other people have not got that make the special moments!”

Influx: How do you feel about camera phones?
Ebrey: “They are brilliant! I have had a double page spread from mine!”

Influx: Is there a particular vehicle you’d love to shoot one day?
Ebrey: “I have a love of ’80s stuff – so anything from that era ticks all my boxes!”

Influx: What makes a good photo?
Ebrey: “To quote Ansel Adams – ‘it’s knowing where to stand.’”

Influx: What advice would you give yourself if you could travel back ten years?
Ebrey: “Buy lots of Ford Escorts and Porsche 993s!”
